Europe
In the 1800's one of the 'moving roads' of Europe were the man-made canals, built for transporting merchandise. Barges, originally horse or man drawn, were gradually replaced by faster means of transportation. Many of the abandoned barges were converted to floating homes, especially after World War II, when there was a housing shortage. One example is the inner waters of Amerdam, currently inhabited by 2,400 floating homes.

Mekong River
Beginning in the Tibetan plateau and winding its way to the South China Sea, the Mekong River is home to many different cultures. Known as the "River of Nine Dragons" in Vietnam, the Mekong River provides homes to the 'boat people' in the Aberdeen Fishing Village in Hong Kong. Here you can enjoy Cantonese cuisine and fresh seafood aboard one of the elaborate world famous multidecked floating restaurants.

The Future

The ultimate 'floating community'' is the
proposed Freedom Ship, a floating city that
will continuously circle the Globe, spending
30% of its time in motion and 70% sitting offshore at exotic touring destinations.

With a length of 4,500 feet, a width of 750 feet, and a height of 350 feet, Freedom Ship will be one of the wonders of the world; a mobile
modern city featuring luxurious living, an extensive duty-free international shopping mall, and a full 1.7 million square foot floor set aside for various companies to showcase their products around the world.
